| Challenge yourself in a New Way |
I just attended a project review today where the project was running on time and on budget, meeting every milestone and producing every deliverable… yet the strategic objectives of the project where not met. The project was run mechanically and simply failed to produce impact.
How many people around us go through their daily lives mechanically? How many consider that they are doing a good job? From the outside the kids are OK, the pay is OK, the neighbors are green with envy, and the world is in order it seems.
How many times did we see something wrong? How many times did we look the other way? How many times did we feel that we could make a difference? How many times did we actually make a difference? There is always no time to do what we want it seems. We cannot afford to waste our time, lose needed energy, face the consequence of a failure, or enter in confrontation with someone.
The challenge my friends is change… The passage from feeling to action… The passage from strategic objectives to implementation of meaningful projects… The challenge is to leave our comfort zone and find the time to do something different, something else. The challenge is to commit for a cause that is not paid for and to enjoy the internal reward that giving can have. The challenge is to reorganize our priorities around our families and work of course, but also around community work. Someplace we can give back, and perhaps we can make a difference in some small specific ways.
WIT offers you the opportunity to expand your circle of influence. Volunteering with WIT can make you feel the priceless internal reward of giving back. I guarantee that you will grow and learn in turn.
Challenge yourself to find the time for volunteerism and community activities.
Together, we can make a difference!

WIT organized, in partnership with the Women in Engineering section of the IEEE NDU Student Branch a workshop entitled “Career Paths in Engineering and Technology” on 8 March 2008 at the NDU Campus. Five women, at different stages of their careers and in different sub-ICT fields, shared their experience with around 120 Engineering students from NDU, AUB, and BAU. The students asked a lot of questions and had many interrogations about their future… The gender issue was also brought up relating to the role of woman in the engineering field. The speakers were Hala Makarem (independent consultant), Tania Mazraani (Berytech), Odille Abou Mrad (Computer Associates), Maysa Yaman (Cedarcom), and Nathalie Awad (New Horizons).
